packing is NO fun. i never want to buy anything ever again, because eventually i will have to pack it.
we just unloaded our house in small town into our new house in hometown. and it was a chore. cheers to friends and family who made it happen. i spent most of my packing energy sighing at unpacked plates and utensils and then finding something else to do or just following the law student around the house as he and robz toted large pieces of furniture out to the uhaul. it's amazing how much shiz we actually have. it's like it mushroomed at the mere mention of packing tape.
our new house is super cute, even if one room doesn't have ceiling lights. it's cozy and private and i may have to get creative, but i believe it'll be a blast. the rox is less enthusiastic, as the house is totally hardwood (phobia #1) and the stairs are slats that you can see through (brand-new phobia #2). which means - less dog hair on the bed!
my mother-in-law is better than your mother-in-law, because she cleaned our house all day friday and saturday, and is coming over again today. seriously. just another reason why i'm so glad i married that boy. his parents are awesome.
pictures to come, although i'm a little creeped out to post pictures of where we live. i may not. you may just have to come visit.
so, for now, i'm still working in small town. i'll hopefully get to visit the boy and the rox on between the week and the weekend, as i'll be on several adventures for the next 3 saturdays. i'm living at my friend's house here, although it may be to my disadvantage. i have high hopes for working out and working lots of overtime, but chew on this. last night's dinner: 1 reese's, 2 snickers, 8 pringles, 6 crackers & cheese, fruit gummies & a coke. this is not good.

drowning in monotony
that title is not really true, but it feels that way. while i am on hold for MDES, thought i'd catch y'all up and explain my lackluster blogging in list form, because it makes me happy.
1. it's hot. and humid. it's mississippi.
2. i'm getting bogged down with life. work, working out, keeping up with life and the uncertainty that lays before us consume most of my time.
3. we started watching weeds. it's eating my life. i actually went on hiatus last week - it got that bad. plus, i'm a little upset with nancy at the moment, and felt i needed a break to regroup.
4. did i mention uncertainty? job uncertainty is not a good feeling. but it's allowing me to choose God over fear and stress every day, even though i must willingly turn my mind from the "what ifs" that abound hourly.
5. my summer schedule is jam-packed. i'll just give a quick rundown, in order of this weekend to august 13. hometown (shower for sister), hometown (party for sister), two free weekends, vegas (bach party for sister), nola (wedding), jackson (wedding), one free weekend and then sister's wedding here in smalltown. too bad we have to be out of our current home before august 1. yes, that is six events in the next nine weeks. in between that, we must move and find employment. did i mention my mother moved too? life is changing, and fast. i can barely keep up.
i hope i don't get pregnant anytime soon either. wouldn't that be awesome? then i'd be unemployed, homeless and knocked up at the end of the summer.

cliffhanger post conclusion, wednesday wussy edition
remember that thursday when i told you about that really neat thing that God did for us? i wish i had different words to type, because right now i am thoroughly confused. i thought a wednesday wussy post would be appropriate.
mystery revealed: that post was about jobs - my current one, and a prospective one. see? not baby lang.
i found out that tuesday my position here needed to change to part-time, especially since they already know we are planning to move. we were not expecting that, and really can't afford it. that's when i sent out the mass text to friends, asking for prayer and praising God for His, plan, because i knew He had one. i sent out a few emails that night, and by 3 pm the next day, i had an interview scheduled with a large firm back home, with a bonus offer to help my husband land a job. i just knew that was God, telling us we were in the palm of His hand.
i had a great interview this past weekend. i was promised a job. "we are going to make you an offer on monday" were the words i heard. naturally, i was very excited and just amazed how smoothly and seamlessly God had orchestrated all the details. i mean, think about it: my job here was going to drastically change, the next day i had an interview, the timing gave me plenty of time to take care of my old job, and after the interview i was promised a job offer with most likely way better money, a sense of security and quite possibly an employed law student. i was eagerly awaiting that email, and feeling very satisfied with myself* for stepping out in faith and that God had answered our prayers beyond our expectations.
*insert heaping helping of humility here.
i didn't get that email monday, but i got it yesterday. they did not extend the offer. they have decided to keep it internal and not create the position. i was absolutely shocked, and very upset. not only did this disrupt the plans we had been making and the plan we thought God had designed for us, but it also seriously altered today's blog post. i am supposed to be blogging about how i have a new job that God provided!
epic fail.
so, friends and readers, that is the big update, and it is not at all what i thought was going to happen. and i am finding out just how hard faith is sometimes. i was so sure God was working things out the first time, and really thought i knew what He was doing. i know just as i trusted God then, and knew He was not surprised, i know i have to trust His will and plan today, even thought i am hurt and confused. i know He is not surprised, and He will carry us.

i feel a wussy wednesday coming on...
wednesday wussy, budget edition. please take the following post with a hunk of cheese, 'cause it's a whiner.
i do not like being on a budget. i do not like not being able to spend money without thinking about its very real impact on other areas of my life. oh, to be single again, and in a time not of economic recession, and saving all my dollahz for fun and frolic while living off daddy's charge accounts. all i'd have to do is not eat much for a while and save up and then purchase away, guilt-free, and worry about it later. the only reason i even got a job in college was for dating purposes. plane tickets to see the law student cost money, and i'm pretty sure the parents would not have footed that bill.
enter marriage (or heck, even just adulthood). budgeting is hard. it's hard for two people living on one paycheck, even with some familial assistance. it's hard to cancel travel plans because of rising gas prices, or choose to cook at home instead of going out for dinner. it's hard when you're having a wardrobe crisis and you can't really afford to revamp it, only mix pieces differently. thankfully, my weight has not drastically changed since college, or i'd really be in the hole! of course, even if i didn't have a budget, i probably still would be a bad shopper and just as indecisive to boot. but that's a separate problem.
but a budget is necessary. my paycheck only contains x amount of money, and we have to make it work, and we have to do it together. fighting about money is not an option in our marriage - we flat-out refuse to do it. we reached this decision before marriage, thankfully, and not after an issue arose. our personal budget is pretty simple. i bring home a paycheck (yes, ben adds whatever he makes too), the law student faithfully designs our budget, and i trust his judgment. even though i work for a CPA, i could not make or stick to a budget on my own. i can barely work my calculator, and have never balanced my checkbook! this way, we control our finances instead of them controlling us and plan for expenses ahead of time. we work to balance wants and needs, the fun things and the necessary ones, so that we're not crying at the end of every month and/or up to our ears in credit card debt. budgeting is a great discipline and though uncomfortable at times, it is good for us and keeps us making smart choices in how we use our money.
unfortunately, insurance, groceries and bills take precedence over fancy nights out, wardrobe updates and gifts. and that's about where i am right now. sigh.
in other news: i'm working out in the mornings (i'm as surprised as you are), the law student is semi-employed and in an office of his own, entertainment icon elizabeth taylor has died, and i found out roseanne barr lives on a nut farm.

sigh
talk about the winter blaaaaaaaaaaaahs. i mean, snow is cool and all, but i am so unequipped to deal with it.
so is the state of mississippi and its resident citizens with drivers' licenses. it took me 30 minutes to drive 7 miles. i passed one wreck immediately leaving our office today, then passed two cars that had recently landed in the ditch on the road in front of our little complex. after that, i decided to ditch my plans for the gym.
immediately after spotting them (and slowing down to about 15 mph), i fishtailed in the white stuff. and while terror gripped me initially and then passed - i was, after all, going 15 mph and it seemed a bit absurd to be scared of slowly rolling off the road into the ditch - i would have been way more embarrassed to be incapacitated 50 yards before turning into the neighborhood.
plus, i really only like it when i'm skiing and there is supposed to be snow. which means, not in mississippi. but it does seem like a good omen for our planned ski trip next year. who wants to go??
so, instead of the gym and instead of payroll, the law student and i spent the afternoon watching 6 feet under in our pajamas. great show. crazy family. then it was leftover crawfish etouffee and msu bulldog basketball.
and if it's gonna snow, i wish we'd get snowed in so work wouldn't be a possibility tomorrow. i could get used to pjs and beer and leftovers and watching everything hbo has ever produced.

oh, baby
i know what you're thinking. and you're wrong. heehee.
yesterday was my deadline day for year-end reports, w2s, and all ugly things tax-related. so, after about 4 hours of sleep and 9 hours of stressful work day, the law student and i had dinner. my highly dramatized drinking-binge consisted of one beer, sipped slowly. to more completely round out my meal and my day, i needed ice cream, so we drove over to the gas station that has a little freezer full of bluebell pints.
i spent what is possibly too long picking out flavors and ended up in line behind 3 young frat boys, all who can grow more facial hair than my 30-year-old husband, who were all buying cigarettes. as the last one was carded, the clerk asked for his birthday.
"twelve eleven ninety-one."
what?
i asked the cashier to be sure i heard him correctly. i had.
i still think of myself as college-age. insert denial here. hearing that kid's birthday, coupled with the 3 gray hairs i had yanked out earlier that morning, was just another rude reminder that i am, in fact, NOT, no matter how young i look or feel.
thanks, life.
p.s. to the scruffy dude with glasses and mismatched clothes who didn't hold the door open for me? you're rude and your clothes are ugly and you need to shave.

monday morning confession
i can't remember the last time i shopped for groceries. or vacuumed. or washed a sink full of dirty dishes after preparing a nutritious, locally-grown homemade meal. or even wanted to. i'm regressing as a housewife. something about this summer and this fall schedule and new football season have conspired against my good intentions and sapped my energy. i've let all this bar exam stuff go to my head. all my years of housewifery, all my standards, are slowly spiraling down.
and let me just tell you, the newly-sworn-in-and-able-to-argue-in-mississippi-courts-but-currently-still-open-to-employment-opportunities esquire does not make it any easier for me. how in the world am i supposed to polish my skills and stay on task when he so willingly washes last night's dishes for me every morning? or dusts and vacuums on sunday afternoons so i don't come home to a dirty house? i left him saturday morning painting bleach on a stain on his shirt, and when i returned home i found he had folded the clean towels and put them in their proper place in our bathroom. this means he pulled them out of the dryer. he doesn't even fuss when i send him a grocery list, at least not so i can hear him. and as a result, i never really remember what we have in the pantry, even though i made the list and the menu, which i can no longer find.
i think back to our first days together. i was often more than annoyed to see cereal bowls with spoons stuck to them on the side table, or half full glasses from the night before in random spots around the house, and i hated stepping on forgotten underwear in the bathroom. but he caught on and began to share in the work of wifely domain. it was such a welcomed help! but i fear i've created a monster. i've made myself totally expendable. i now know just how efficient my little househusband is. he's running circles around me with the vacuum, while i just lay on the couch with a glazed look on my face. i have got to get it together, pull myself up by my apron strings. because i know he's going to get a job soon, and then where will we be? looking at each other over a sink full of dirty dishes while i try to remember how to fold a shirt.
i'm not complaining. really. i know how good i've got it. and i know he enjoys making and keeping me happy more than he actually likes cleaning. and by no means do i want him to stop. i loooooooove basking in the faint glow of a really clean home, and doubly so when i didn't do the cleaning. i could really get used to this. stay away, ladies. this one's mine.

untitled monday post
first and foremost, i would like to publicly thank my new followers, katie and jessica. new followers always make me happy. seriously, if you're secretly stalking me, be brave and publicly follow me. i love to know who finds me mildly entertaining. come out, come out, whoever you are!

me and jess, some years ago--reuniting soon!
so, goings-on with the langs: msu football, miami dolphin football, mother-in-law's birthday (and getting to see sweet niece olivia-bonus!), new small group, the swearing off of hard liquor (or at least whiskey), baby showers, visiting old friends and of course, waiting out the bar exam results. we get them thursday! thank you for all of your prayers and thoughts. i'm more than certain the law graduate passed, but it's nice to know for sure. i'll keep you updated.
i think back about him studying for the LSAT. he was so disciplined! then, he graduated and we got married the next weekend. i quit my job, because who wants to work the week of their wedding, and then after their honeymoon? and then, we just had to get up here to small town, so we packed up our horse trailer (yes, horse trailer) and moved completely in 24 hours. that was when we discovered this town does not sell cold beer. rebels, and hot beer? oy vey.
it was exciting and a bit scary here at first, trying to find jobs and our little niche. if you were my friend then, you heard all about it. but life puttered along here and picked up speed. we found jobs, friends and a church, and all the little secret things i love about this town. and life just sort of happened. the last three years have been great and i think we've both learned a lot--wow, just thinking about it is kind of cool! and now, at the beginning of our 4th football season here (can you tell i'm a happily converted sports fan?), we are waiting. waiting for bar exam results. waiting for a job offer. hell, even an interview would be nice. waiting for...what? i hesitate to say waiting for our life to start, because it already has. three years of school, growing, new friends, life routines, work. all these things happened, and were good, and are valuable and memorable. so while we wait, and i feel like the big door of life is almost open and i too often get caught up in the whirlwind of our future, i struggle to remember that today counts, too. we are not in limbo, we are in motion, and we have two hands and two feet to do the work of the gospel. "waiting for a job offer and subsequent new life direction" is no excuse to be idle. i'm trying to think of this as a time to sow, and to be still, and to learn and prepare.
i've mentioned we are reading the bible all the way through, haven't i? i love it. we get up early, which i hate, and pray together, and then read the chapters for the day, and then pray again. and as much as it physically pains me to get up earlier than i would like, i really crave that time with the law graduate to pray together and be in the Word together. granted, we are a week behind because of football weekends and a certain sleepyhead, but i'm glad we are doing this together. it's hard to stay mad at someone when you have to hold hands and pray with them every day.
hope this monday finds you all well. i'll be back later!

post about posts
so, we're back from vacation. however, my body went into revolt. i developed a hellacious sinus infection that took me a week, a steriod shot, a round of antibiotics, a regimen of heavy-duty decongestant and a new found-love of the neti pot* to cure. pair that with a complete software and hardware update at work. let me just say i'm happy i can breathe again, literally and figuratively. the computer still has glitches, but now i can handle them instead of just saying "eff it" and falling asleep right there at my desk.
*neti pot--a fabulous little aladdin's lamp of warm water and saline solution that washes out your sinus cavities. i may be addicted. it could also double as a small house-plant watering can.
so, needless to say, i did not get a lot accomplished last week, especially here on the blog. i owe you several posts. here is a listing of posts to come*: graduation, los angeles (day-by-day in pictures), beautiful blog award, a wussy wednesday just for a friend, and general life musings.
*not that you'll necessarily see all of them. i'm notorious for making out to-do lists just to make myself feel better. i don't always have to finish the list. consequently, there are literally 5 half-marked to-do lists floating around the house.
so, first things first. i was nominated for a beautiful blog award from my friend elizabeth, who thinks i'm funnier than i really am. thank you! elizabeth, we really need to hang out soon. now, i have to nominate 7 people (7? maybe not 7) and contact them, and then tell you 7 things about me. but i'm changing the rules here. instead, i'll nominate some blogs that i think are worth checking out for you to visit. nominees are: kisses from katie, the redwoods on redbud, day and splashing with sara. katie, sara and day are all missionaries that inspire me. the redwoods are a family from church and i love reading about their daughter.
now, 7 things about me. hmmm....you already know i'm cute, i'm short, have a hard time finding jeans, love to cook, have a fear of being left behind in the rapture and an even greater fear of spiders, love the golden girls, save glass jars and plastic containers like my mom, and that i lint roll my dog. what else?
1) i did not know i had curly/wavy hair until after i graduated high school. i always just brushed and blew it dry. it never occurred to me that it was a sign of hidden texture. rainy days sure are easier. but now, no matter which way i style my hair, i wake up the next day with the opposite.
2) i love horses. i am absolutely obsessed with them. as a child, i drew them, read about them, pretended i was one, counted them incessantly on road trips. i knew all the breeds, colors, anatomy and equipment. i had more than 50 my little ponies and have breyer model horses at home. i was the kid who actually got a pony. 20 years later, we still have 3 at my grandmother's house. they still fascinate me. they terrify the law graduate.
3) my favorite snack is lays potato chips and a cold coke. i usually crave salt more than i crave sugar.
4) i hate having polish on my fingernails. it feels too heavy.
5) i really don't like to shop. it gives me a headache, can't make a decision and i have too much guilt. i'd rather spend my money on plane tickets, nice dinners and nights out with friends.
6) ice cream is my favorite dessert. i could eat it every night, which is probably why i cannot get rid of these pesky, persistent unwanted pounds. i think it comes from my dad. growing up, he had a bowl of ice cream every night after dinner. some time ago, when his cholesterol went up, the doctor advised him to lay off the ice cream. he did. the cholesterol went up higher. he resumed the ice cream.
7) i cannot comfortably sleep unless it is cold with a cool breeze on my face and there is a loud symphony of white noise machines. silence is too loud. tv or radio on? forget it. i can only do that on the couch. at home, i have the ceiling fan, a rather noisy air conditioner, the bathroom fan and a humidifier. it's really a lovely way to fall asleep, but it does become annoying when i'm not in my own bed. i wish i could sleep as soon as i laid down, but that is not me. and then i get on my own nerves.
ok, rain's gone, grill's on, and i have dinner to make. good night, and see you tomorrow!
*not that you'll necessarily see all of them. i'm notorious for making out to-do lists just to make myself feel better. i don't always have to finish the list. consequently, there are literally 5 half-marked to-do lists floating around the house.
so, first things first. i was nominated for a beautiful blog award from my friend elizabeth, who thinks i'm funnier than i really am. thank you! elizabeth, we really need to hang out soon. now, i have to nominate 7 people (7? maybe not 7) and contact them, and then tell you 7 things about me. but i'm changing the rules here. instead, i'll nominate some blogs that i think are worth checking out for you to visit. nominees are: kisses from katie, the redwoods on redbud, day and splashing with sara. katie, sara and day are all missionaries that inspire me. the redwoods are a family from church and i love reading about their daughter.

monday, everyday
monday, you win. i give up.
your official 24-hour stay this week was not really any worse than usual, except that i had about a week's worth of work to finish in three days, dinner to make for eight people, a recovery to make from an overindulgence of milk of magnesia, and a husband with a brutal exam schedule. but really, nothing out of the ordinary.
except, you stayed.
tuesday, i was admiring myself/primping in the mirror at work (i'm a bit vain, ok?) and saw the faint outline of a tag through the much-higher-than-normal-for-that-shirt neckline. i had worn my shirt backwards and didn't know it. i blame it on the accompanying cardigan, but i'm pretty sure it was because i got dressed half-asleep in the dark. i was too annoyed with you to correct it and flaunted your victory over my day.
i was sure you had lost track of time and would beat a hasty retreat. boy, was i wrong. not only were two sets of quarterly reports missing in action at the office, i ordered some skincare products online a few weeks ago, and had not received them yet. i made a second order for a new-and-improved product and free cleanser, also mysteriously lost in limbo. so while on the phone with my mother, i check my order status. it said "delivered," and then i saw my fatal error--i had both orders sent to my old apartment in college. i have not used that address since i got married. it somehow showed up as my default address, and apparently i also managed to charge my dad's card for the first order (thanks dad!). i contacted the store and they put in a request to ups (i did not mention my personal sidebeef with the brown truck) for a reroute (new word!). thankfully, a good friend of my sister lives in our old apartment, graciously took my 10 p.m. phone call while studying for her last exam, and is taking care of my package(s) for me until next weekend. apparently she told anna (sister) about this a while ago, but it was not mentioned to me. thanks, sis.
so thank you, monday, for commandeering my week. you have wreaked havoc and left me annoyed and just plain tired in your wake. here's hoping for a bright and shining thursday (pleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease). but maybe i shouldn't say that just yet--i am about to make a phone call to mdes.
in other news: the law student has one more exam--EVER! graduation is next week, then look out, los angeles!

barely breathing
tax. season. sucks.
i could go on, but that about sums it up. oh hell, i'll just go on.
thank you, shady client numero uno, for paying your employees in cash all year and not reporting it, and for having numbskull employees who decide on april 8th that they want a w2. i'm so looking forward to going through those TIME CARDS you brought me and adding up hours, payrates, tips and cash paid outs since EFFING SEPTEMBER i wish i had the authority to fire you. but i don't.
and thank you, new shady client numero dos, for not even bothering to pay your employees or your employer's taxes correctly and instead just estimating them and paying someone else to figure it out at the last minute. i have nothing better to do than to set up your quickbooks file, enter in all your estimated information and come up with your correct totals and pay the difference for you, all by next week when it's due. FAIL.
it's not like i have over 50 quarterly reports left to produce, unemployment rates to check, stupid audits to do or have to explain to the IRS that yes, i did make those tax payments on the due date. no, i have no idea why you can't post them correctly. yes, i think you made it all up, since the amounts don't even reflect what i paid.
let's sum up the remainder of april, shall we?
next week, tax week. i'm sure we'll get 15 new clients who will waltz in and expect their taxes done that afternoon. never fails. my first tax season, someone came in with four years' worth of tax returns they had never filed and wanted them done that day. april 15th. she honestly thought it would be that easy. never ever do that to a CPA. april 16th--OFF. thank the lord, but it really only piles up work for the next week. and off to super bulldog weekend! the next week, sales tax. the next weekend, double decker with the sisters! the law student always has to study, so i'm glad i'll get to play. the next and final week, quarterly reports. and i can breathe again. thankfully i have fun weekends between now and then.
