cliffhanger post conclusion, wednesday wussy edition

remember that thursday when i told you about that really neat thing that God did for us? i wish i had different words to type, because right now i am thoroughly confused. i thought a wednesday wussy post would be appropriate.

mystery revealed: that post was about jobs - my current one, and a prospective one. see? not baby lang.

i found out that tuesday my position here needed to change to part-time, especially since they already know we are planning to move. we were not expecting that, and really can't afford it. that's when i sent out the mass text to friends, asking for prayer and praising God for His, plan, because i knew He had one. i sent out a few emails that night, and by 3 pm the next day, i had an interview scheduled with a large firm back home, with a bonus offer to help my husband land a job. i just knew that was God, telling us we were in the palm of His hand.

i had a great interview this past weekend. i was promised a job. "we are going to make you an offer on monday" were the words i heard. naturally, i was very excited and just amazed how smoothly and seamlessly God had orchestrated all the details. i mean, think about it: my job here was going to drastically change, the next day i had an interview, the timing gave me plenty of time to take care of my old job, and after the interview i was promised a job offer with most likely way better money, a sense of security and quite possibly an employed law student. i was eagerly awaiting that email, and feeling very satisfied with myself* for stepping out in faith and that God had answered our prayers beyond our expectations.

*insert heaping helping of humility here.

i didn't get that email monday, but i got it yesterday. they did not extend the offer. they have decided to keep it internal and not create the position. i was absolutely shocked, and very upset. not only did this disrupt the plans we had been making and the plan we thought God had designed for us, but it also seriously altered today's blog post. i am supposed to be blogging about how i have a new job that God provided!

epic fail.

so, friends and readers, that is the big update, and it is not at all what i thought was going to happen. and i am finding out just how hard faith is sometimes. i was so sure God was working things out the first time, and really thought i knew what He was doing. i know just as i trusted God then, and knew He was not surprised, i know i have to trust His will and plan today, even thought i am hurt and confused. i know He is not surprised, and He will carry us.

i feel a wussy wednesday coming on...

wednesday wussy, budget edition. please take the following post with a hunk of cheese, 'cause it's a whiner.

i do not like being on a budget. i do not like not being able to spend money without thinking about its very real impact on other areas of my life. oh, to be single again, and in a time not of economic recession, and saving all my dollahz for fun and frolic while living off daddy's charge accounts. all i'd have to do is not eat much for a while and save up and then purchase away, guilt-free, and worry about it later. the only reason i even got a job in college was for dating purposes. plane tickets to see the law student cost money, and i'm pretty sure the parents would not have footed that bill.

enter marriage (or heck, even just adulthood). budgeting is hard. it's hard for two people living on one paycheck, even with some familial assistance. it's hard to cancel travel plans because of rising gas prices, or choose to cook at home instead of going out for dinner. it's hard when you're having a wardrobe crisis and you can't really afford to revamp it, only mix pieces differently. thankfully, my weight has not drastically changed since college, or i'd really be in the hole! of course, even if i didn't have a budget, i probably still would be a bad shopper and just as indecisive to boot. but that's a separate problem.

but a budget is necessary. my paycheck only contains x amount of money, and we have to make it work, and we have to do it together. fighting about money is not an option in our marriage - we flat-out refuse to do it. we reached this decision before marriage, thankfully, and not after an issue arose. our personal budget is pretty simple. i bring home a paycheck (yes, ben adds whatever he makes too), the law student faithfully designs our budget, and i trust his judgment. even though i work for a CPA, i could not make or stick to a budget on my own. i can barely work my calculator, and have never balanced my checkbook! this way, we control our finances instead of them controlling us and plan for expenses ahead of time. we work to balance wants and needs, the fun things and the necessary ones, so that we're not crying at the end of every month and/or up to our ears in credit card debt. budgeting is a great discipline and though uncomfortable at times, it is good for us and keeps us making smart choices in how we use our money.

unfortunately, insurance, groceries and bills take precedence over fancy nights out, wardrobe updates and gifts. and that's about where i am right now. sigh.

in other news: i'm working out in the mornings (i'm as surprised as you are), the law student is semi-employed and in an office of his own, entertainment icon elizabeth taylor has died, and i found out roseanne barr lives on a nut farm.

wednesday wussy

it's a wednesday wussy post, just for my friend elizabeth.

my body is conspiring against me. not only am i just now recovered from previously mentioned hellacious sinus infection and living with a disagreeable gi tract, but i suspect that my body actually wants to get pregnant against my will. my fertile period seems to be extremely long this time. maybe my body is producing ambiguous symptoms on purpose. maybe it's just the antibiotics. it doesn't matter--i'm on to its games, and i will win.

i gained four pounds on vacation. four. and we really didn't eat all that much! i ate SALADS on vacation! we accidentally skipped dinner two nights. i only had ice cream once. geez.

i think my camera is dead. it started suffering grand mal seizures on graduation weekend. you know, the moment i pick it up to take a picture of my law student receiving his diploma. so, i've found the camera cord (fingers crossed for a successful upload!) for the computer, found my stash of photo cards and have actually taken pictures of an entire vacation, and now my camera is kaput. sigh.

i have a bit of a vacation hangover/depression. before los angeles, i was kind of ok living here in small town. it had its good points, its perks: the farmer's market, our church, the park and the trails for roxy, a cute little downtown, good public schools, and it seems to be perfectly situated as a sort of home base for all my travels. i'm really no more than 4 hours away from any given friend except jules, and we're only an hour from an international airport. not to mention we live rent-free (for now) and i am employed. but after los angeles, i'm in a bit of a funk. i don't really want to live in los angeles, per se. you know, traffic, smog, crime, etc. but it is just as intoxicating to me as it once was: very grand, very busy, very cool. and very not like small town. sigh.

i have been accosted with two emails this week about homeless dogs--my poor little heart can hardly stand it. one family is looking for a new home for their dachsund, and another family has been semi-adopted by a stray. i am particularly drawn to the scraggly stray. i think she and roxy could get along. anyone want a dog?

in happier news: i may have the best husband ever. last week, i woke up at 5 a.m. unable to breathe and proceeded to blow my little nose off in the bathroom. instead of 1) rolling over and 2) telling me to go to the hall bathroom (like i might have done), he got up and made me a glass of cold water and a hot towel to put on my sinuses. awwwwww. he's also brought me lunch twice this week. whatever it is that he wants, he's playing his cards very shrewdly.

post about posts

so, we're back from vacation. however, my body went into revolt. i developed a hellacious sinus infection that took me a week, a steriod shot, a round of antibiotics, a regimen of heavy-duty decongestant and a new found-love of the neti pot* to cure. pair that with a complete software and hardware update at work. let me just say i'm happy i can breathe again, literally and figuratively. the computer still has glitches, but now i can handle them instead of just saying "eff it" and falling asleep right there at my desk.

*neti pot--a fabulous little aladdin's lamp of warm water and saline solution that washes out your sinus cavities. i may be addicted. it could also double as a small house-plant watering can.

so, needless to say, i did not get a lot accomplished last week, especially here on the blog. i owe you several posts. here is a listing of posts to come*: graduation, los angeles (day-by-day in pictures), beautiful blog award, a wussy wednesday just for a friend, and general life musings.

*not that you'll necessarily see all of them. i'm notorious for making out to-do lists just to make myself feel better. i don't always have to finish the list. consequently, there are literally 5 half-marked to-do lists floating around the house.

so, first things first. i was nominated for a beautiful blog award from my friend elizabeth, who thinks i'm funnier than i really am. thank you! elizabeth, we really need to hang out soon. now, i have to nominate 7 people (7? maybe not 7) and contact them, and then tell you 7 things about me. but i'm changing the rules here. instead, i'll nominate some blogs that i think are worth checking out for you to visit. nominees are: kisses from katie, the redwoods on redbud, day and splashing with sara. katie, sara and day are all missionaries that inspire me. the redwoods are a family from church and i love reading about their daughter.

now, 7 things about me. hmmm....you already know i'm cute, i'm short, have a hard time finding jeans, love to cook, have a fear of being left behind in the rapture and an even greater fear of spiders, love the golden girls, save glass jars and plastic containers like my mom, and that i lint roll my dog. what else?

1) i did not know i had curly/wavy hair until after i graduated high school. i always just brushed and blew it dry. it never occurred to me that it was a sign of hidden texture. rainy days sure are easier. but now, no matter which way i style my hair, i wake up the next day with the opposite.

2) i love horses. i am absolutely obsessed with them. as a child, i drew them, read about them, pretended i was one, counted them incessantly on road trips. i knew all the breeds, colors, anatomy and equipment. i had more than 50 my little ponies and have breyer model horses at home. i was the kid who actually got a pony. 20 years later, we still have 3 at my grandmother's house. they still fascinate me. they terrify the law graduate.

3) my favorite snack is lays potato chips and a cold coke. i usually crave salt more than i crave sugar.

4) i hate having polish on my fingernails. it feels too heavy.

5) i really don't like to shop. it gives me a headache, can't make a decision and i have too much guilt. i'd rather spend my money on plane tickets, nice dinners and nights out with friends.

6) ice cream is my favorite dessert. i could eat it every night, which is probably why i cannot get rid of these pesky, persistent unwanted pounds. i think it comes from my dad. growing up, he had a bowl of ice cream every night after dinner. some time ago, when his cholesterol went up, the doctor advised him to lay off the ice cream. he did. the cholesterol went up higher. he resumed the ice cream.

7) i cannot comfortably sleep unless it is cold with a cool breeze on my face and there is a loud symphony of white noise machines. silence is too loud. tv or radio on? forget it. i can only do that on the couch. at home, i have the ceiling fan, a rather noisy air conditioner, the bathroom fan and a humidifier. it's really a lovely way to fall asleep, but it does become annoying when i'm not in my own bed. i wish i could sleep as soon as i laid down, but that is not me. and then i get on my own nerves.

ok, rain's gone, grill's on, and i have dinner to make. good night, and see you tomorrow!

not procrastinating

i feel fat. wednesday wussy for you. as this is not soon to change, i'll leave it at that. moving on...

the law student is stressing something major. bar applications apparently suck. poor thing. keep praying for a job opening!

tax season officially ends april 16 for me. law school graduation is may 8. i'm thinking week-long vacation for me and the law student, especially before he begins studying for the bar. so i'm asking you for suggestions! here are a few of my thoughts:

west coast winery
mountains (though i imagine we'd get bored quickly just sitting in a cabin, so i'd need activities)
LA to visit friends
beach (the law student has never been to the gulf coast. can you believe that?)
asheville, north carolina--visit family, see cool things (this actually needs to be done anyway)
boston, chicago (again) or some other cool city with fun things to do other than shop, cause the law student HATES that. and this is last on my list for a reason, please note. all the others are my top ideas.

so, keep me informed! i'd love your input. what's going on in our country in may that we should see?

wednesday wussy

it's back and in full force.

i have a caffeine-induced withdrawal headache. i only drink one cup of (super strong) coffee per morning, and the occasional coke during the week. so, we're not talking a lot of caffeine intake here. as with everything, this has a story. throughout high school, college and even a little bit after my marriage, i didn't drink coffee. or much, anyway. i did not need it to function, didn't even know how to make it (yes, i was easily outwitted by small kitchen appliances). and it usually made me shaky or run for the toilet (it has since lost that effect, much to my dismay, but that's another story). i did not start drinking coffee regularly until 1) we got a coffee maker for a wedding present (bless you, whoever you are) and 2) we moved to oxford and the law student (coffee freak) made it every morning. thus, the beginning of my friendship with/dependence on coffee. so sunday night, i ordered from alice.com and ordered coffee. went to the kroger last night and although that morning had thought to myself that we needed more coffee even with the alice.com order, i did not get any. and that really sucked this morning.

know what else sucks? getting pushed to the edge of your bed by your dog. the law student last night decided that roxy was cold, so i brought her kennel into our bedroom and we all went to sleep. normally, we close the kennel, but i didn't last night. so at 3 am, roxy wakes me up with whining. granted, she's still in her rox box instead of already on the bed, so she is still a "good dog." i put her in the bed. i jockey for position in my own bed for a good 45 minutes and then around 4 am, she snuggles in between us and pushes me away. so back in the rox box she goes, and i wake up again at 5:40 am. that dog wasn't cold one bit.

let's not even talk about the scale or the waistbands of most of my pants. or that chik-fil-A sandwich i just ate. but that coke sure hit the spot. caffeine crisis averted.

wussy wednesday wussy

first, my apologies for being a wednesday wussy wussy. i let you down 2 whole weeks in a row! le sigh.

my current wussy wednesday diwemma? i've wost my bra. my favorite bra.

it's not as bad as it sounds. i did not lose said underpinning in a wild display of alcohol over-indulgence or frenzied passionate clothes-shedding (but that would make for great stories). i discovered this morning my nude-colored, slightly push-up, everyday bra was nowhere to be found. this is very upsetting in hazy early-morning hours. so now i have to call parentals on both sides to see if they have found my underthing hanging around.

the law student and i had so much fun in starkvegas this past weekend! mostly, it involved a lot of packing, unpacking and re-packing, but fun nonetheless. we even got a cute picture of the both of us--no small feat. i promise to edit this post later and add the photos. we got soaked--well, the law student got soaked. this smarty-pants had enough common sense to not go sit in the rain to watch the game and waited until the rain had come to an acceptable cease-fire (for the most part). we tailgated with lindsey and the mayor and ate too much food.
too much food as in too many oatmeal cookies, ham and cheese sandwiches, and fritos with french onion dip. hello! mcfly! this fly honey has to be in a swimsuit SATURDAY. the prospect is disheartening.

so, in honor of my pudge, i will give you 2 pudge-friendly recipes. these recipes just LOVE your pudge.
poppyseed sandwiches

you'll need: butter, mayo, poppyseeds, sister schubert (or kroger brand!) yeast rolls in the tin, ham, provolone and sugar. you'll use: a bread knife, the oven, the metal tin, and a little basting brush if you have one, or a spoon.

take your frozen uncooked rolls out of the tin. mom swears there are some at kroger in a small rectangular tin (about 8-10 rolls), but i've never seen them. you can try to cut across the entire rolls so you have top and bottom halves, or you can cut up the individual rolls and then rearrange them back in the pan after. this way is easier to start, but a little annoying to remember how they go back in the tin. place the bottom halves back in the tin.

preheat your oven to around 350, or according to the directions for the rolls. melt about half a stick of butter in the microwave in a medium bowl. once completely melted (don't burn), add about half a cup or more of mayo, some sugar to taste (you want it kind of sweet) and lots of poppyseeds, and stir into a not-too-thick, not-too-runny, about-the-consistency-of-mayo sauce. the sauce should be savory (butter) and sweet (sugar), so adjust accordingly to taste. brush or spoon the sauce on the bottom half of the rolls, pretty thickly. add the ham and provolone and put the roll tops on top. heat the sandwiches in the oven for 20 minutes or so, according to package directions. a tailgate hit!!!

oatmeal cookies

cream well in a mixer: 3/4 cup shortening (crisco), 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 1/4 cup water

mix well in a large bowl: 3 cups oats (regular, not instant), 1 cup flour (all-purpose, i guess--i just use what's in my little canister, and i promise you i bought the stuff years ago), 1 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. baking soda.

add oat mix to cream mix. spoon onto cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12 minutes. they're best when still warm and gooey.

tampa in T-33 hours.

wednesday wussy

today is sooooo pretty outside. i long to be in the out-of-doors in the warming sunshine, maybe walking the roxy or reading in the park.

as if. too many bugs for me to be lying down in the grass and such, namely those horrifying eight-legged terrorists commonly known as spiders. blech!

(this is the only image i could stomach. if you want to see a nasty spider, click here.)

call me an arachnophobic if you will. i call it careful. i HATE those things. i know they serve a purpose and i really try not to kill them (or have them killed, as is usually the case) in their natural habitat, but heaven help them if they get anywhere near me. my house, my car, my office are all out-of-bounds. when i spot them, i tend to immediately scream. i do this at home, in the car and at the office. in front of clients. i have clients kill them for me. everyone in the office knows what that scream means now. and those little horrors know how to find me too. i am the only one who is continuously assaulted by their presence. they don't crawl across anyone else's keyboard, or water glass, or doorway. just mine. they can smell my fear.

today, i am a wednesday spider-wussy. i'll share some of my incidents with you now.

-i was driving to the gym one afternoon and on the phone with my friend amanda. a hidden spider dropped down from my rearview mirror and got caught in the air conditioner's breeze and flew at my face. i screamed, dropped the phone, swerved a bit and almost wrecked and pulled over into a driveway and got out screaming and hitting my face.

-a spider once crawled up my water glass at work. just climbed up and peeped over at me. this was not the same one that ran across my keyboard.

-i was driving somewhere in my car, with the roxy in the back. i saw a spider on my car, freaked that i couldn't kill it and just knew it was going to jump onto me (you know, cause spiders can jump through glass and all at 30 mph), pulled over in a liquor store parking lot and asked the guy working to come kill it with a broom. he obliged and killed the spider. the down side? the rox got scared and sprayed. in my car. on the seat. nasty.

-too many times to count, spiders darken my doorway and refuse to let me pass. this happened just yesterday. a big green spider stood guard at my door and i had to get ben to come kill him. i clearly remember one morning at work there were not one but two spiders (one big and ugly, one small and sneaky) hanging out on the brick doorway of our office. i really almost called someone upstairs to come get them.

-i tend to scream and usually fly backwards when i see a spider in the office. as i mentioned, my co-workers are now adjusted to this behavior. so one day, i bend down below my desk to look assess some cpu malfunction, only to discover a HUGE black tarantula-esque creature at my feet. i scream lounder than usual and literally fly backwards across the room in my chair, scaring my two co-workers (we share an office) to death. and then they start laughing. hysterically. knowing my fear of spiders and having seen it in action too many times, they thought it was a good idea to plant a fake spider by my desk. it had been there for about a week.

so, there you have it. i am a wussy when it comes to spiders. ugh. *shudder* happy wednesday y'all. thank the lord in heaven above it's almost over.

yawn

hello, it's your favorite wednesday wussy again! i cannot stay awake to save my life. well, that's actually an exaggeration, obviously. i mean, i'm good, but i'm not that good.

let's get to it, shall we? i have a headache and don't feel much like being witty and charming. i feel like being a wednesday wussy.

i have a headache, cause i'm tired, cause i stay up too late because the law student is underemployed and likes to stay up too late too. got that? which means i so do not want to finish these payrolls and get them off my desk. or add up the subtotal, taxes, shipping and handling and then grand total for my two-year-old wedding photos that i have not ordered yet but told my mom i did. seriously. should it take me three whole evenings to fill out 2 order forms from a pile of pre-sorted, pre-picked-out pictures (that i had to get mom to help with anyway)? didn't think so.

i love (not) that the law student can't make his own salad for dinner and will instead wait for me to do it (which i didn't) and then decide that driving to burger doodle is much more time- and money-efficient. he is just as capable as i to chop vegetables, undo the cap on dressing, fluff his lettuce in a bowl and cut off bits of roasted chicken, but apparently does not know this.

my dog stinks. i've threatened to bathe her since friday, but i think she's on to me.

speaking of stinky, i am mad at dove brand deodorant. let's just walk through my relationships with deodorant, hmmm? i'm like a 6-month dater. i'll use a brand (usually lady mitchum cool dry soft solid) for a length of time and we're GREAT together. then, the magic fades, as does the odor-masking, perspiration-reducing effectiveness, so i'll go and get a new brand, but i always come back to lady mitchum. well, this girl has learned her lesson. in one of my many flings with a new brand, i bought dove (citrus lemongrass scent, i believe) but it did not do it for me. it was still too early to go back to my lady, so i found dove clinical prescription strength (cool cucumber scent) and thought for sure it would work and then some. i'd probably be able to skip days, even. this is not the case. not only does this deodorant instruct you to put it on at night (pshhuh! as if!), it does not work. every time i wave or even type too fast, my nose crinkles.

i'd really like to skip pilates tonight because i'm so tired and my shoulders hurt from yoga. wish i hadn't eaten that burger from handy andy's for lunch. and that sausage egg and cheese mcbiscuit this morning. call me mcgut.

well, it's 3 pm and my timesheet is missing about 2 hours on it. guess i'd better get to making it up.

post with pictures from the weekend coming soon. i miss my friends.

have a wussy wednesday, y'all!

shower power

it's wussy wednesday again. guess what i'm doing? at work, blogging, wishing i was somewhere out in the sunshine, waiting on a lunch/farmer's market date with the law student. i really don't want to work today.

*sigh*

so, my wussy wednesday post--here you go. i do not want to clean my shower. it has a live black mold on it that has crept from the shower curtain to the wall of the tub. i mean, isn't that nasty?! eck. and for the past 4 days, i've looked at it, sneered, and stepped out of the shower and away from all motivation to clean it up. well, i broke down today and half-as-cleaned it at 6:40 this morning after my shower. i found a bottle of scrub free spray and half-heartedly, then whole-heartedly, then frustratedly, sprayed the mold and the other suspect pink areas near the drain of my shower and using (ruining) a perfectly good washcloth not immune to bleach to clean it up. you see, that scrub-free spray doesn't spray so well. so after i had showered, i had bleach all over my hands that needed to be cleaned. you know, again. i hope the law student appreciates all that i go through to make his life more clean and comfortable.

wednesdays are for wussies

wednesdays are tough. i'm sure you've heard the term "hump day" (and if you haven't until now, it is not a reference to routine weekday sexual activities), and everyone seems to think this makes wednesdays not only tolerable but enjoyable. but man, sometimes, i just have to draaaaag myself through a wednesday, and fridays are still 2 days away. all wednesday long. so i have dubbed myself a wednesday wussy. you can be one too!

a few thoughts for all you wednesday wussies out there:

i vacuumed up a spider yesterday while i was cleaning, and didn't scream at all, although i was marginally afraid the vacuum would shoot it back out at me, which would have elicited a large scream and quite possibly a conniption fit.

my right index toe (pointer toe, if you will) is numb on the tip, left side bottom. curious. and curiously annoying. it started last night around 7, and is still occuring, and i have no idea why. maybe it's narc-toe-lepsy.

woke up this morning around 5 am to an empty bed, which is weird because the law student was there when i went to sleep. found him underneath a sleeping bag on the couch with the roxy. his explanation: "i couldn't sleep, so i came out here and got on the couch and fell asleep." in his regular shorts. unzipped. so he got up in the dark, felt the need to dress, but not entirely. whatever. who am i to judge someone's sleeping neuroses?

i am currently a fan of greek yogurt, particularly with honey, blueberries or strawberry preserves. it was super tangy at first, but now i am hooked on it. but i would feel much better if it didn't have 12 grams of fat. kind of shooting myself in the foot here.

my dog ate a roach last night. i encouraged her to do so.

is it only 10:30 am?????? curse you, wednesday.

i'm waiting for lunch with the law student, then a visit to the local farmer's market. what's getting you through the day?
